With a large collection of curated vinyl anda new school approach to cocktails, this listening lounge and bar offers thoughtfully-crafted small plates anda drink menu that celebrates a deep connection between music and mixology. Each drink riffs on iconicVirgin Records albums from the past, remixed with a modern twist. They are bold, stylish and full ofcharacter, mirroring the music that shaped their creation. With a menu tuned to the vibe, seasonal smallplates riff on the soulful, glam-soaked spirit of the 1970s. Guests can settle in at curated listening stationsand let the sound wash over them while digging through rare vinyl finds or revisting cult classics.

Originally opened in 2020 as Origin Raleigh, a Wyndham Hotel, this 126-guest room property boasts its own meeting and event spaces, fitness facility, and full-service restaurant and bar, Good Day Good Night. The standout hotel is conveniently situated at the intersection of the downtown Warehouse and Glenwood South Districts, a short walk from the convention center and the best entertainment Raleigh has to offer. In recent years, the Warehouse District has been reborn as a center for arts and culture, while Glenwood South has become a popular hotspot amongst an exploding population of young professionals. Together, these neighborhoods have become well-known for their diverse mix of art venues and galleries, the city’s best restaurants, breweries and nightlife, a high concentration of co-working spaces and innovative businesses, and a rapidly growing residential base. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the shift in consumer demands that resulted, hotel ownership saw an opportunity to better distinguish itself through a distinct, local narrative and fresh approach to travel. In joining Marriott’s Tribute Portfolio of boutique hotels, they planned to attract the independent thinker in search of a destination that would illuminate the Raleighite way of life.

PROCESS

Virgin Hotels, world-renowned for some of the most unique properties within the hospitality industry, reached out to Green Olive to collaborate on the development of their brand new vinyl lounge concept. Ourteam was brought on during the ideation phase, which afforded us a “ground zero” perspective on theinspiration for this new brand. Once the Virgin team landed on the name “Hidden Grooves,” we began workon a brand identity package consisting of logo, typography, color palette, and supporting imagery. Theseelements were translated into comprehensive brand standards and brought to life by our team across arange of touchpoints, including signage, menus and collateral. The resulting design approach is not merelyan identity, it’s a manifesto. Rooted in the raw, DIY ethos of classic zine design, it offers a fitting personalityfor a listening bar in London’s eclectic Shoreditch neighborhood. Inspired by the rebellious energy ofindependent print culture, the design channels a handmade aesthetic and experimental spirit to create anidentity that is both accessible and authentically subversive.

With an aggressive timeline in place, Green Olive Media was engaged to help steer and execute this transition. Selected for our extensive hotel, restaurant and bar experience, we brought a keen understanding of both the hospitality industry and the Raleigh market to the table. Our first task was to immerse ourselves in the brand architecture, developing a comprehensive document outlining long-term strategy. In communicating exactly what hotel is and isn’t, we defined its objectives, goals and values while paying close attention to Raleigh’s competitive landscape, equipping ownership and management teams with the tools to articulate the brand direction, purpose and positioning as clearly as possible. Once those parameters were established, we explored a name for the hotel, providing the foundation for a thoughtful backstory capitalizing upon the city’s rich history and legacy. Logo design — supported by a system of designed touchpoints ranging from signage to in-room collateral and sales materials — soon followed, ensuring a visual solution befitting the hotel’s stylishly bold interiors.
